Film Finance and Pre-Production Tools, Compared

Producers keep asking which of these tools replaces which. Mostly, none of them replace each other — they solve different problems and are sold as if they solved the same one. Here is the honest map, including the parts where we are the wrong answer.

A word on bias. We make one of the tools listed here, so read this accordingly. We have tried to describe every other product by what it actually does rather than by what makes ours look good, and we link to each one so you can check. Where a competitor is the better choice, we say so — there are three such places below.

The landscape splits into four jobs, not one

Almost every argument about which film tool is “best” comes from comparing products built for different stages. The useful division:

The jobWhat it answersTools built for it
Production management How do I schedule, break down and run the shoot? StudioBinder, Movie Magic, Yamdu, Celtx
Script intelligence What is in this script, and what will it cost? Filmustage, Largo.ai, Cinelytic
Waterfall modelling Who gets paid, in what order? Shamel Studio, Tools for Film, FilmWaterfall
Financing the film Does this package close, and who do I take it to? QuickSummer

A production that is fully financed needs the first row. A production that is not needs the fourth.

Production management: not our category

StudioBinder, Celtx, Yamdu and Movie Magic handle script breakdowns, stripboards, scheduling, call sheets and crew management. Movie Magic remains the industry standard for scheduling and budgeting; Yamdu has become something close to a regional standard on European mid-budget film and television.

If you need a shooting schedule or a call sheet, use one of these, not us. We do not produce either, and building a worse version of Movie Magic Scheduling would help nobody. These tools begin roughly where our work ends: they assume the money exists and the picture is going.

Script intelligence: genuine overlap, different aim

Filmustage reads a screenplay and extracts cast, props, locations, wardrobe, vehicles and VFX, then carries that breakdown into schedules and budgets. Its paid tiers run from around $19 to $59 per month, with a free tier for testing. Largo.ai analyses screenplays and production data to produce budget ranges and box-office and VOD forecasts, and can simulate how casting changes the financial picture. Cinelytic ingests scripts or decks to estimate budgets and model revenue by cast, genre and release strategy, priced around $79 per script analysed.

Our Script Triage and Story Structure tools overlap here, but aim at a different question. Filmustage asks what is in this script and what will it cost to shoot. Largo and Cinelytic ask what will this earn. Ours asks is this script ready to show a financier, and where does it sag — a craft and convention assessment with a page-indexed beat map, not a revenue forecast.

If your question is genuinely “what will this earn based on comparable performance data,” Largo.ai and Cinelytic are built specifically for that and have the data assets behind it. Our forecasting is driven by your own presale and territory assumptions, which is a different method with different failure modes: ours is transparent and auditable but only as good as your inputs; theirs is data-driven but harder to interrogate.

Waterfall modelling: the closest comparison

Shamel Studio offers a free waterfall calculator that models gross receipts through distribution fees, recoupment and profit participation. Tools for Film covers recoupment order, preferred returns and profit participation. FilmWaterfall is building professional recoupment modelling.

These are good tools and the free ones are genuinely free. If all you need is to show an investor the order of repayment on a single deal, they will do it, and you should use them.

The difference is what surrounds the waterfall. A waterfall calculator takes revenue as an input — you tell it what the film earns. Our Liquidation Calculator builds that number first: territory-by-territory presale estimates, tax incentives, gap, packaging uplift from cast attachments, sensitivity analysis across variables, then the waterfall, then break-even and investor returns. The waterfall is the last step rather than the whole product.

Whether that matters depends entirely on whether you already know your revenue assumptions. If you do, a free waterfall calculator is the right size of tool.

What is genuinely different here

Three things, none of which are “we also do waterfalls”:

1. The model is deterministic and auditable

Our Greenlight Score is rule-based, not machine learning. It produces a 0–100 score with a confidence tier, and every input that moved it is visible. That is a deliberate trade: an ML model trained on box-office history will likely out-predict a rule set on average, but it cannot tell a financier why, and a producer cannot argue with it in a meeting. Ours is designed to be defended line by line across a table.

2. Financing modelling includes soft money properly

The calculator carries a tax-incentive lookup across major territories, and the incentive is modelled as part of the financing structure rather than bolted on. Estonia is the case we know best — the rebate is 30% of eligible spend, rising to 40% only when two creative crew are Estonian tax residents, drawn from a €9.2M annual fund on a first-come basis. Getting that condition wrong is a six-figure hole in a plan. We wrote that one up in full.

3. It ends in a route to market, not a PDF

Most tools stop at a document. A validated project here can be matched to investors, distributors and co-production partners through the Industry Engine, submitted through E-Pitching with status tracking, and tracked through a deal pipeline. Whether that reach is useful to you depends on your own network — if you already have the relationships, this is the part you least need.

Where we are the wrong choice

Stated plainly, because a comparison that finds no weaknesses is an advertisement:

The short version

If your film is financed and you need to shoot it, this is not your category — go to production management. If your film is not financed, the question is whether you need a calculator or a case. A free waterfall tool gives you a calculation. What we built is meant to give you something you can defend in a financing meeting, and a route to the people who sit in one.

Try the calculator before you believe any of this: it is free, it needs no account, and it will tell you more about whether we are useful to you than this page can.
